COMPETENT PERSON

A competent person / certified environmental professional is a person who has been certified by the Director General of the Department of Environment (DOE) of Malaysia to be competent to supervise the operation of a pollution control system or the management of scheduled wastes.

The individual needs to go through the certification process and comply with all the requirements before he/she can be certified competent.

LEGAL REQUIREMENT

This "Competent Person" requirement is mandatory according to the Malaysian's environmental protection law, under "Section 49a of Environmental Quality (Amendment) Act 2012".

There are several types of "Competent Person" under environmental professional which are certified by DOE, and they are registered under National Registry of Certified Environmental Professionals (NRCEP):

  1. Certified Environmental Professional in Scheduled Waste Management (CePSWaM)

  2. Certified Environmental Professional in Bag Filters Operation (CePBFO)

  3. Certified Environmental Professional in Scrubber Operation (CePSO)

  4. Certified Environmental Professional in the Operation of Industrial Effluent Treatment Systems - Biological Processes (CePIETSO - BP)

  5. Certified Environmental Professional in the Operation of Industrial Effluent Treatment Systems - Physical Chemical Processes (CePIETSO - PCP)

  6. Certified Environmental Professional in the Treatment of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (CePPOME)

  7. Certified Environmental Professional in Sewage Treatment Plant Operation (CePSTPO)

  8. Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC)

  9. Certified Erosion, Sediment and Storm Water Inspector (CESSWI)
